Three years ago I photographed the wedding of Nicki and Tim here in Madison, WI. I knew around that time that Nicki had a huge interest in photography, but being the modest person that she is, Nicki didn’t really talk too much about it to me until 9 months post wedding when she emailed me to tell me that she was starting her own photography business. It seems everyone and their mom around here is opening their own ‘photography business’, so when I received her email for just a second I thought, ‘yeah yeah, you and everyone else’. (insert eye roll) That thought quickly went away though, and I just had a feeling that this time hearing the words ‘I am opening my own photo business’ was something different and something legit.
Nicki needed some fun head shots for her website, so shortly after that email she drove from Minnesota down here to Madison to have me photograph her. It was then that I learned that she indeed was going some where with her business. She was being careful, cautious, she was educating herself, buying the gear she needed, second shooting before taking on her own jobs, she was being smart and in my opinion taking all the right steps. Something hardly anyone seems to do anymore. She practices like a mad woman, and critiques the crap out of her images which just drives her to be a better photographer, which you can see in her work. With each session she shoots she just gets better and better,
The following year Nicki hired me again for a portrait session, but this time it was of her and her hubby Tim. We talked photography, lots of photography, and had a grand ol time making super cute pictures.
Once again this year, Nicki and Tim came back to Madison and hired me for another couples session. We started off in the early evening shooting at an intimate little spot along the Pheasant Branch Conservancy in Middleton and ended the shoot at another part of the Conservancy full of fields of tall grass, wide open sky, and lots of geese over head. Nicki loves adding in her vintage flea market finds to her own work, so it was totally fitting that she brought along some new little treasures to use for the portraits of her and Tim. If anyone knows me and my shooting style, I am totally not a prop gal, BUT if a client wants to incorporate some fun things into their session I tell them to bring on the proppy props:)
I love love love that Tim and Nicki travel back to Madison to have their portrait session with me, it really means a lot, especially when there are so many awesome photographers not only around Madison, but around where she lives too. Fun times were had, and it was so awesome to get to work with such a great couple again!!
